Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was taken to hospital when a HGV crashed into the back of a stationary car on the A19.
The woman’s Ford Focus was stationary in lane one, heading northbound with its hazard warning lights on before the Renault HGV cement mixer crashed into the back of the car.
The crash caused serious damage to the car, and the female driver had to be extracted from the vehicle by firefighters.
The A19 in County Durham was closed northbound between the A689 (Wolviston) and the A179 turn off (for Hartlepool) near Elwick for several hours.
The woman, in her 40s, was taken to North Tees Hospital after suffering spinal injuries.
The HGV driver, aged 40, sustained bruising to his shoulder and elbow and was seen at hospital but was later discharged.

A spokesman for North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 09.37 for a collision between a car and lorry on the northbound A19. We dispatched one paramedic crew who took one patient to North Tees Hospital.”
The road was closed from the A689 slip road onto the A19, while there were also long tailbacks on the A19 in both directions as motorists faced severe delays throughout the morning.
A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police added: “Enquiries are ongoing and we would appeal for anyone with dash cam footage from the area at the time to contact Cleveland Police on the 101 number quoting ref 126530.”
