Detectives investigating a suspected arson attack which destroyed a children's play park in the North East have arrested three people in connection with the incident.

An investigation was launched on June 28, after it was reported that damage had been caused to Beacon Lough East Park children’s play park on Sundew Road, in Gateshead.

The damage was caused by fire and was believed to be the result of two wheelie bins being set aflame which then spread to the play equipment causing extensive damage – estimated around £20,000 - £30,000 to repair.

Thankfully no one was injured however, the park still remains closed to the public while it is made safe again.

An investigation was immediately launched and working alongside Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, enquiries have led to three males, two 17 and one 18, arrested on suspicion of arson.

Neighbourhood Sergeant Andy Hyde has thanked those who got in touch with information.

He said: “Arson is an extremely serious offence; fire is very dangerous and can quickly spread and this incident could easily have resulted in serious injury or even a fatality.

The Northern Echo:

“I want to thank those who have reached out to officers and helped us with our enquiries. The information you have provided has helped secure these arrests. It is always great to see how our communities come together in times like this to support us.

“We are still urging anyone else who hasn’t already got in touch to do so. Every bit of information is vital to our investigation.”

Group Manager Paul Thompson, of Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Like our residents across Tyne and Wear, we are proud of our communities and are committed to keeping you safe.

“Following this arson attack we worked closely with the police to reach out to the public and call on you for support to try and identify those involved. You responded to that call and we want to say thank you.

The Northern Echo:

“Incidents like this are concerning not just because of the damage they do to the community, but because of the safety risk they pose both to those responsible and to those living nearby.

“The wildfires across the country this week show that the tiniest spark can lead to a catastrophe. Please think twice before getting involved in this type of criminality as we don’t want anyone to ever get hurt.”
