Plans have been submitted that could see an abandoned building opposite Darlington station converted into a five-storey 44-bed hotel.

The property, which can be found at 1 Waverley Terrace in Darlington, could be purchased by Darlington Borough Council as part of the Bank Top Station Masterplan.

Plans would see the former building completely demolished and replaced with a five-storey hotel complete with 44 beds.

Five stories would maximise the accommodation and demand that could be seen from Darlington train station and the town centre, the plans argue.

The ground floor would consist of the main entrance and reception area, a café, office room, staff room, kitchen and plant room.

The building would also have five spaces for car parking which would be accessed via Willow Place but is aimed at people coming from the nearby station.

Forming part of the former Cattle Market, the site falls under a compulsory purchase order aimed at redeveloping the area surrounding Darlington Bank Top Station.

As part of the station's master plan, Darlington Borough Council feels the site and adjoining land “presents a major opportunity to deliver new amenity-focused” developments.

The area also falls within the Town Centre Fringe area, a site that has also been earmarked for red-development in an attempt to “change the image of Darlington around the train station.”

The hotel could offer “attractive and suitable accommodation” for both leisure and business visitors, the plans argue.
