An inquest into the death of a young dad who died following a police chase nearly three years ago has taken a step closer after a coroner set a date for a pre-hearing review.

Kelvin Bainbridge, 19, suffered fatal injuries when he was hit by a police car after jumping from a vehicle following a six-minute pursuit.

The father-of-one died at the scene in Middlestone Moor, Spennymoor, on October 18, 2019.

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) investigated the circumstances and sent its report to the Crown Prosecution Service for consideration.

The Northern Echo:

After more than two years it was decided no charges would be brought against anyone in relation to the incident.

At a brief inquest hearing on Thursday, the senior assistant coroner for County Durham and Darlington Oliver took stock of all other proceedings relating to the matter.

The hearing held at Crook Coroners’ Court was attended by Kelvin’s parents Troy and Suzanne Bainbridge, who was represented via a zoom call by solicitor Chanel Dolcy.

Mr Oliver said: "I know the family have a variety of concerns they may want to have addressed and scope out in terms of how we do the inquest.

"My instinct at moment is to have a pre-inquest review and address those head on and then decide the shape and nature of the inquest in terms of issues and witnesses."

Ms Dolcy added: "As I have indicated the family do have concerns that they would want addressed so a pre-inquest hearing would give them an opportunity to shape how the final inquest is to form."

Mr Oliver listed the pre-inquest hearing for September 13.

The Northern Echo:

In its report released last October, the IOPC said that, at around 2.30pm on October 18, 2019, a Durham police officer driving a marked vehicle began a pursuit of a Nissan Primera, which was being driven by the teenager.

After failing to stop when asked to do so by the police, Mr Bainbridge’s vehicle crashed in Central Drive, Middlestone Moor.

A spokesman said the teenager got out of the Nissan while it was still in motion, and it was at that point that he was hit by the police car..
