New pictures of Tynemouth Beach show how the region is recovering from two days of extreme heat.

Thousands flocked to North East beaches as temperatures soared to around 35C for most parts of the region.

The UK also recorded its hottest day ever on Tuesday, reaching over 40C for the first time.

Temperatures dropped on Wednesday to around 20C in the North East, much to the relief of many who struggled in the hot conditions.

Pictures show how Longsands Beach, which was packed with thousands of beachgoers on Tuesday was much quieter on Wednesday morning as temperatures dropped and windier conditions returned.

King Edward Bay in Tynemouth, North Tyneside, was also much quieter this morning with no sunbathers in sight.

So we decided to head down to see the stark contrast between the last two days and this morning - here's a number of before and after shots.

Temperatures at the popular coastal spot hit highs of 21C on Wednesday and are expected to drop to 16C by Friday.
