The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms as the North East reaches its peak temperatures during the record-breaking temperatures – here’s when.
The North East is currently at its peak temperature today with many places across the region experiencing temperatures as high as 39c.
However the heat isn’t set to last as a yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued by the Met Office for this afternoon.

When will the thunderstorms hit the region?
A yellow warning for thunderstorms has been issued for much of the North East between 4pm and 8pm tonight.
Lightning strikes and strong, gusty winds have been predicted for many, along with some damage to buildings and structures.
There is also a small chance that lightening strikes could trigger wildfires, which could cause damage to infrastructure and property, the forecaster has warned.
Currently it looks like Newcastle is the most likely place to see thunderstorms with a 60% chance of rain and thunder at 5pm.,
However other areas such as Newton Aycliffe, Durham, Bishop Auckland and Teesside also have a chance of rain.
Although thunder isn’t predicted for these areas, it’s more than likely considering the hot and humid air.

Some areas might escape the wet weather, however, with Darlington seeing just a 20% chance of rain at 4pm.
What’s the weather like for the rest of the day?
Luckily, the rain and thunder looks set to clear the hot weather bringing temperatures down to more manageable levels.
Across the region, temperatures are set to drop by a few degrees to around 31 and 32c, still hot, but more manageable.
In Middlesbrough, temperatures are set to drop by five-degrees bringing the temperature down to 34c at 5pm with a steady decline to 28c at 11pm.
In Durham, temperatures will drop by six-degrees and continue to decline to 24c at 11pm.
