A roundabout at the entrance of a county town has been branded an "absolute disgrace" as residents hit out over its slightly dim appearance.

Located on the A167 in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, just outside The Station Hotel, the roundabout has become overgrown with weeds and dry grass.

Now, residents are calling on action over the roundabout, which they claim gives off a "dreadful impression" to visitors to the town.

However, the council has responded, saying arrangements are being made following concerns raised over its appearance.

Sheila Almack, who lives in the town, said many of the roundabouts in the centre of Northallerton are sponsored and look “beautiful.”

Ms Almack said: "But with this little one, which is plonked next to County Hall on one side and the station on the other, you’d think it would have been cared for to a bigger extent really."

She claimed potholes and roundabouts are usually improved when the Tour de Yorkshire arrives, but that they return to normal once this is over.

She added that the "roundabout" on the A167 is a problem and said: “It’s so small too, it’s a third of the size of the big ones and it shouldn’t and wouldn’t take much doing, but it’s just a matter of the council deciding they were going to do it.”

“I do think it just needs a really nice tidy up and to be honest; it doesn’t even need pretty flowers that need caring for or anything.

“It just needs a complete and utter tidy-up, but I don’t know if they’ll do anything about it.”

In response, Nigel Smith, head of highway operations at North Yorkshire County Council, said each year they “undertake a programme of proactive weed-spraying on our highways.”

He added: “Whilst the first treatment has been carried out, the weeds are not dying back as quickly as expected so we are currently making arrangements to remove the weeds and tidy the roundabout as well as arranging for a second treatment to be undertaken across the county where necessary.”
