Emergency services battled with an incident at a former Teesside chemical factory on Tuesday (July 12) evening - as firefighters, paramedics and police officers were seen on the site.

Police cars were spotted closing off the road at the Seal Sands Roundabout at around 8pm after a reported incident at the former INEOS Nitriles on Seal Sands Terminal, Billingham.

Five fire engines attended the incident, which was thought to involve a plume of smoke coming from an industrial tank.

However, following further investigation work, firefighters found that the plume was thought to be 'non-toxic'.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Service said: "We were called to an incident on 12/07/2022 at 7pm at INEOS on Seal Sands Road.

"Five fire engines were in attendance from Billingham, Stockton, Middlesbrough, Guisborough and Grangetown.

"We used breathing apparatus and gas monitor to check the plume coming from the tank.

"The plume was found to not be toxic, and the tank was left the in hands of on-site staff.

The North East Ambulance Service has added there are "no injuries" related to the incident, but a hazardous response team were on standby.
