A Newcastle student has told of her “day to remember” after graduating and getting engaged on the same day last week.
Philippa Wilson, from Cramlington, Northumberland, had no idea her boyfriend, now fiancé, Ben was planning to propose when he got down on one knee after her university graduation ceremony.
Philippa, 21, was celebrating graduating from her four-year Psychology degree at Northumbria University last Thursday (July 7) when her chef boyfriend popped the question.

She told the Northern Echo: “I had literally no idea at all he was going to propose. We’d talked about moving in together by the end of the year but we hadn’t looked at rings or anything it was a total surprise.
“I thought if he was going to do it it would be on a birthday or something, but I had no idea.
“At the time we were just getting pictures then he turned around and got the ring out then dropped down on one knee.
“He had kept it really quiet, none of my family knew and he’d only told some of his family and one of my friends so she could film it.
“I think you can hear my mam bursting into tears on the video. It was definitely quite a shock.

One of Philippa’s friends who was at the graduation captured the moment on camera as Ben, a 26 year old chef, can be seen dropping down on one knee to Philippa’s shock.
The happy couple have been together for nine months but have known each other for more than a year and a half and are now looking forward to the future together.
A spokesperson for Northumbria University said: “We wish Philippa all the best and we hope she enjoyed the celebrations.”
Students across the region are graduating in ceremonies this week including those who missed out on graduations over the last two years, due to the covid pandemic.
