Work is continuing apace to tear down a former warehouse which has been a blot on the Darlington landscape for a number of years.

The former Sports Direct building, which has been empty for several years, is being demolished by Darlington Borough Council to make way for housing.

Plans for the eyesore site in East Street are yet to be submitted but the council says it has been earmarked for “quality residential development”.

Workers have been on the site since May while work to pull it down started in earnest last month.

Not much now remains of the building, which was also once a bowling alley and nightclub and was previously home to Magnet Furniture Group, which used it as a retail showroom and depot.

The council bought the site last year to prepare it for future regeneration. It has been disused since Sports Direct moved to its current Cornmill Centre location.
