Two men have been arrested following a serious crash that badly damaged a community centre.

A Grey Vauxhall Insignia collided with a Shaid Housing building at the Humber Hill junction with the B6532 near Stanley shortly before 5.50pm on Friday.

The crash causing serious damage to both the building and the vehicle.

Two men were arrested at the scene, one on suspicion of dangerous driving and driving under the influence and the other of possession of Class A drug and possession with intent to supply.

Both men have since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

A spokeswoman for Durham Constabulary said: “Officers are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, who might have dashcam footage of the incident or anyone who saw the Vauxhall driving in the area earlier in the day.

“The registration number of the Vauxhall is DS61 YHH.”

It is understood a woman who was almost hit by the car was taken was taken to hospital to be treated for shock.

A spokesperson for North East Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 17:53 on Friday evening to a one vehicle road traffic collision where a car had truck a building on Humber Hill, Stanley.

"We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and a clinical team leader. One patient was taken to University Hospital of North Durham."

The building has now been fenced off to make it safe.

A County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Reports of a road traffic collision near Wear Road, Stanley came into CDDFRS control room just before 6pm on Friday July 8.

"Crews from Consett and Seaham attended the incident. On arrival crews found a private vehicle with two adult males had collided with an unoccupied building.

"Crews extricated one adult male, the other had extricated himself. Both were transported to hospital with minor injuries.

"Police and ambulance service were in attendance. Firefighters left the scene at 6:37pm.”
