Two people have been taken to hospital with injuries after a crash involving four cars at a garage forecourt on the A167 in County Durham.

Durham Roads and Armed Policing Unit tweeted the accident happened at the Shell Garage near Croxdale, south of Durham, shortly before noon on Sunday (July 10). 

While full details are not clear, it appears a black BMWX5 has collided with parked vehicles on a garage forecourt before a petrol pump was hit.

Two people in the BMW were taken to hospital by ambulance.  The County Durham and Darlington Fire and rescue Service (CDDFRS) was also in attendance.

CDDFRS group manager Ian Irving said: "We were called to deal with one vehicle. It was a collision between a vehicle and some parked cars and a petrol pump. 

"We released the passenger of the vehicle. The driver managed to self-rescue but there was some assistance needed for the passenger. 

"We alsol assisted in mopping up some fuel, which had spilt. Staff at the garage did a good job in isolating everything, once the collision had occurred."

Police closed the road was closed at the Croxdale and Butchers Race roundabout in both directions, while they dealt with the incident.

The road was closed for several hours whlle police carried out investigations. 

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We received a call to 999 at 11.56am today to a road traffic collision involving four vehicles at Barmoor petrol filling station on the A167. 

"We sent two emergency ambulance, a clinical team leader and two Hazardous Area Response Teams and took two patients to James Cook Hospital."

Durham RPU tweeted: "If you were a witness to this collision, involving a black BMW X5 approximately midday today, please contact us via live chat or 101, quoting incident DHM-10072022-0226."

Durham Police have been contacted for more information.
