TWO people had a lucky escape when they suffered only minor cuts and bruises after a plane flipped over and crashed as it landed at a North East airfield.

Emergency services were called after the light aircraft turned over at the Eshott Airfield in Felton, Morpeth, Northumberland, at about 1.30 on Saturday (July 10).

Two ambulances were dispatched to the scene and the Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended.

The two occupants, who suffered minor cuts and bruises, were given a check over by paramedics.

Once the plane was righted, they flew off again.

Airport manager Sam Woodgate told The Northern Echo said: “We had a visiting aircraft had an issue, I thinks with its nose leg.

“It turned over on landing. Both the occupants were treated by the ambulance service just for minor cuts and bruises.

“The Great North Air Ambulance was dispatched but wasn’t required. The two people were treated in the ambulance and then sent on their way.

“The aircraft was recovered and everyone was ok.”

Mr Woodgate said the scene was cleared quickly, to get the runway operational again.

The airfield was shut for a little bit while they deal with it.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call to 999 on Saturday at 13:36 to reports of a light aircraft crash at Eshott Airfield in Felton, Morpeth.

"We dispatched two emergency ambulances and Great North Air Ambulance Service also attended the scene.  Two patients were assessed and discharged at the scene with minor injuries. They did not require transport to hospital."
