Mayor improvements need to be made at a takeaway, food hygiene inspectors have warned.

Ceylon Cuisine on Parliament Road was inspected on May 24 and slapped with a one-star rating.

The takeaway in Middlesbrough serves up Sri Lankan and South Indian food.

During the inspection, council officers found a toilet that opened out directly into an area where food was being handled.

The owners will need to install a lobby between the two areas to prevent any risk of contamination.

There wasn’t even any soap at the toilet wash basin so people couldn’t properly clean their hands at the sink. Council officers found dirty cardboard lined the surfaces of the premises, which cannot be effectively cleaned.

The report states: “Major improvement is necessary to comply with legal requirements as detailed within this report. With this in mind, I must warn you that should similar conditions be identified during future visits this authority may consider formal action.”

Dirty cloths were also found to be used in the takeaway and inspectors reminded the owners that it was important that separate cloths are used for the cleaning of raw and ready-to-eat food equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

The wall cladding, a shelf and the floor covering in the back kitchen were all damaged and not capable of being effectively cleaned. The floor covering in the kitchen was dirty, especially at floor/wall level and the owners have been told to thoroughly clean it and maintain those standards.

Once they have made the changes required, businesses can organise a re-inspection.

There are 18 firms with a one-star rating in Middlesbrough.
