The historic Durham Miners' Gala returned on Saturday - and thousands turned out in Durham city centre to join in the celebrations.

Saturday's event marked its 136th anniversary as it was held for the first time since 2019 due to the pandemic.

There was a party atmosphere in the bright sunshine from early on as people celebrated the work of trade unions and miners’ associations, while also protesting against the current Conservative government.

The crowds then made their way to The Racecourse where high-profile union leaders gave rousing speeches, encouraging people to join unions and to campaign for better pay and working conditions.
