A man has denied being armed with a machete in a house burglary that took place in July last year.

Phillip Ferguson is accused of being in possession of a broad-bladed knife during the burglary at an address in Front Street, Annfield Plain, near Stanley.

Durham Crown Court heard that a television set and computer equipment were stolen in the break-in, on July 14, 20221.

Appearing at a plea hearing via video link from nearby HMP Durham, the 20-year-old defendant denied a charge of aggravated burglary but admitted handling stolen goods, computer parts belonging to the victim of the break-in, on the same day.

Vic Laffey, for the defendant, said he accepts being at the house, but denies having a machete and claims he did not realise others involved were armed.

When he discovered they were, he immediately left the premises, added Mr Laffey.
