Proposals to install a canvas canopy over temporary public seating area; the temporary change of use of a hunting stables courtyard to provide public seating, and to install canvas canopy whilst construction works are ongoing, have been submitted to Durham County Council.

Permission is being sought to expand the already consented temporary facilities, related to the wider application.

Repurposing of existing buildings for mixed tourism, leisure and educational uses, formation of a new car park, creation of play facilities, erection of new visitor arrival building and vinery cafe, works to Walled Garden and associated infrastructure and landscaping.

The temporary facilities are in place to provide an alternative location for members of the public to obtain refreshments, admission tickets and access toilet facilities, during the construction phases of the above development.

This application seeks to create a covered seating area in the Hunting Stables courtyard, using a canvas canopy, to expand the seating currently available to customers who wish to enjoy the park during inclement weather.

The temporary facilities are expected to remain in place until September 2024, to include the construction phase and to allow for unforeseen delays to the programme.

The facilities will allow Raby Castle to continue to operate as a visitor attraction during this period, safeguarding employment, contributing to the local economy and maintaining access to a much-loved heritage destination within County Durham.

The facilities already approved are a café facility within a canvas yurt, a refreshment kiosk and toilet facilities for customer use.

They have proved very successful over the summer months but there is concern about a lack of covered seating during the winter months.

The proposed covered seating area situated in the Hunting Stables courtyard will provide an additional 40 seats.

A planning statement from Raby Castle said: "The proposed works will allow for the greater enjoyment of the asset by the public, particularly during inclement weather over winter. The works are minimal in nature and have previously been approved in a different location within the site, where it did not prove detrimental to the heritage structure."
