Dehenna Davison, a once-loyal Johnsonite MP, elected to Bishop Auckland on the back of his promise to Get Brexit Done in 2019, has said the beleaguered Prime Minster should ‘go now’.

Ms Davison, who earlier this year denied plotting to oust Boris Johnson as part of the so-called Pork Pie Plot, openly admitted voting against him in the recent confidence.

This morning she told the Northern Echo her under-fire boss should stop ‘inflicting additional damage by clinging on’.

This new crisis for the Prime Minister comes after it was revealed he was aware of allegations of sexual misconduct against the former deputy chief whip Chris Pincher before he appointed him.

After Mr Pincher resigned, No 10 and a number of government ministers, denied that Mr Johnson was aware of the complaints against the deputy chief whip.

However, Lord McDonald, a former civil servant in the Foreign Office, said Mr Johnson was briefed in person about a formal complaint against Mr Pincher in 2019.

The Government admitted the Prime Minister was briefed but claimed he could not recall it when the allegations were raised last week.

Mr Johnson has since confirmed he was aware of the allegations and admitted to making a bad mistake.

The Prime Minister refused to confirm whether he said: ‘Pincher by name, pincher by nature’.

Mr Johnson, who survived a vote of no confidence a month ago, is currently safe from another vote for a year.

But it is understood he could face another confidence vote within days as members of the 1922 committee of Tory backbenchers, chaired by Sir Graham Brady, could change the rules.

Ms Davison said: “From submitting my letter to Sir Graham several months ago, to voting against the Prime Minister in the confidence vote several weeks ago, I can safely say I do not have confidence in the Prime Minister.

“The right thing for him to do for the sake of the country is to go now, and stop inflicting additional damage by clinging on.

“We all deserve better.”

The Northern Echo:

Ms Davison has now written to Sir Graham calling for another vote of no confidence.

In her letter she said: "I wrote to you some months ago expressing my lack of confidence in the prime Minister.

"In the time that has followed, nothing has improved - in fact, further lies have been peddled, and more good colleagues have been sent out to defend the indefensible.

"Things have got worse, and our country deserves better.

"For the sake of our great nation, and for the sake of our great party, the Prime Minister must go.

"I write to ask for a vote of confidence as soon as possible to allow us to finally draw a line under this sorry saga."
