A stretch of track on the East Coast Mainline is causing travel upset as some passengers say they have had their drinks spilled due to a “terrible juddering" ride.

Passengers travelling on LNER services claim a stretch of track in between Darlington and York near Northallerton is proving unusually uncomfortable.

In recent days, customers travelling onboard the Azuma, have voiced their concerns, with one saying “35 years of high-speed trains, I’ve never had it anything as bad.”

On social media, one customer posted a picture of their coffee after allegedly spilling while over the stretch of track.

They said: “The joys of another Azuma service. Coffee out of the cup passing points just north of Northallerton.

“Terrible juddering ride north of York. Almost another two hours to go.”

They said: “In 35 years of HSTs and Electrics never had it anything like as bad. Next trip on GC.”

The user tweeted again on another occasion showing a video of her coffee spilling over the sides of her cup due to the bumpy ride.

The Northern Echo has received similar reports of this in recent weeks.

LNER has previously replied to concerns, saying “carriages can judder if the infrastructure below is not completely level leaving the service to slightly move more than normal.”

David Horne, managing director at LNER, has also replied to concerns on Twitter.

He tweeted: “My apologies for the experience. Next week we are spending the day with a cross-industry team to discuss this very issue!”

A spokesperson for LNER told The Northern Echo: “At LNER, the comfort of our customers is a top priority. We listen to all customer feedback and share with the relevant teams, including those around the comfort of the journey.”

Network Rail did not comment.
