Members of the public are being invited to give their views on a new coastal activity hub on Redcar’s seafront.

The hub would host a range of activities, sports and events, that could include windsurfing, kiteboarding, triathlon, running, cycling and yoga.

It would be located in a unique shipping container village that can be used as a meeting place and an informal base for sports clubs/organisations, community groups, school groups, activity leaders, families, or groups of friends.

This is all part of the Redcar Town Deal, a government initiative that granted Redcar with £25 million.

The Town Deal Board is a group of industry experts, business leaders, and community representatives, who have volunteered to support the development of the Redcar Town Deal and the regeneration of Redcar.

They have developed some large-scale regeneration plans on how to make Redcar a vibrant, sustainable town.

Facilities for the Coastal Activity Hub would also include a range of indoor and outdoor multi-use spaces, toilets, showers, lockers, an equipment store, changing facilities and parking.

The external space adjacent to the container village will form a flexible event area that could be used for a range of outdoor activities, such as exercise classes, sports, and demonstrations. It could also provide space for an event village, from which competitions could start and finish, including running festivals and triathlons.

The public can find out more, and give their views on proposals, by visiting: https://redcarcleveland.uk.engagementhq.com/hub-page/redcar-town-deal.

The public also had the opportunity to ask questions on Redcar High Street outside the former Marks & Spencer building on today, (Tuesday July 5), where people put questions to architects, designers and the project team as they talked through the proposals.

Other Redcar Town Deal proposals that are out for consultation include a new family activity centre and cultural hub where the former Marks and Spencer used to be, improvements to the appearance of the high street and southern section of the esplanade and improving station road.

Darren Winter, Chair of Redcar Town Board, said: “The Costal Activity Hub is an exciting project which with the work from the project team at the Council, has already secured support from British Triathlon and British Cycling to run competitive events.

“Along with our existing competitive sports event offering, our aim is for the Coastal Activity Hub to make Redcar a destination competitive sports town. We encourage those who couldn’t attend to come along to previous consultations to come along and see the Town Deal project plans, meet the project team, ask questions, and share their views about these exciting projects to help shape Redcar into the town they want it to be.”

Cllr. Chris Gallacher, Cabinet Member for Economic Development at the council, said: “We’re inviting as many people as possible to take part in this consultation, as we very much value our residents’ feedback.

“Working in partnership with the Redcar Town Board, we have an opportunity to deliver a number of projects to boost tourism and economic opportunities for our residents, not only in Redcar, but the wider borough.”

This is not a council-generated scheme, council officers are offering some administrative support but Redcar Town Board members are the arbiters of the town deal.
