A teenage girl has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car near a school.

The 13-year-old was struck by a Vauxhall Zafira near to the Outwood Academy on Hall Drive in Acklam, Middlesbrough.

Police, paramedics and the air ambulance were sent to the scene yesterday afternoon and the girl was airlifted by the Great Air Ambulance Service to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle.

She remains in hospital today receiving treatment for what police say are serious head injuries.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We received a call at 2.42pm this afternoon to reports of a road traffic incident on Hall Drive, Middlesbrough.

"We dispatched two specialist paramedics and requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS).

"One patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI) by air for further treatment."

Officers in Cleveland are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage of the incident.
