A popular Proms in the Park event is set to return to Darlington this weekend.

People are being urged to get their flags and picnics ready for the musical event at South Park bandstand.

The free event offers music for all tastes and ages, from 3pm, and revellers are encouraged to bring along their own picnic, rugs or chairs and flags to wave.

Donations are encouraged, which will raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, the national charity of the British Army.

This year’s event will feature The Royal Signals (Northern) Band, Pipes & Drums 102 Battalion Reme and The Soldiers of Swing (Britain’s Got Talent semi-finalists) and Mowden Junior and Reid Street School Choirs, offering a wide range of music.

Dave Crowther, Warrant Officer and band manager, said: “This has become a firm favourite and a fantastic event in the band’s programme and our musicians always look forward to sharing their music with the wonderful people of Darlington.”

Councillor Mike Renton, the council’s cabinet member for stronger communities, said: “Proms in the Park forms part of our celebrations of all that our Armed Forces, past and present, do for us, and I’m honoured to lead this community tribute to them.
