ONE of the oldest rugby clubs in the North East has appointed its first woman president.
Caroline McHale succeeded Michael Howard as President of Durham City RFC at their AGM earlier this month.
She will be the 43rd President, and the first female to hold the position in the club’s 150-year history.

A member at the club for over 20 years, Mrs McHale’s involvement has grown since 2015, firstly taking on the role of media officer followed by House and Social Secretary in 2016, upon the retirement of the Club Steward and Stewardess.
As a volunteer-led organisation – managed by members for members – this is very much a hands-on position overseeing the day-to-day management of the club.
Mrs McHale is looking forward to adopting the role of ambassador, representing the club at games, official functions and other events.
She said: “It’s a tremendous honour and I feel very privileged to be the first female President of Durham City RFC, especially as we head into our 150th season, a very special and exciting time for our club.
“I am so proud that the club I love is breaking new ground and I look forward to playing my part in the next stage of our journey. My hope is that this will encourage more women to get involved in the running of their clubs.”
She follows in the footsteps of husband, Richard Wilkinson, who has himself the honour of being the only person to have held office of President twice, and is currently club chairman.
