Durham Police are investigating after some of its officers were confronted by 50 ‘intoxicated’ youths at the end of last week after trying to confiscate alcohol from the teenagers.

The emergency services were called to a grassed area between Bishop Auckland Rugby Club and Etherley Dene on Thursday (June 23) after concerned members of the public had reported 40 youths, who were around 15 years old, drinking alcohol in the area.

After arriving at the field, officers from Bishop Auckland Neighbourhood Policing Team were allegedly faced with 50 ‘intoxicated’ youths in the area, who all attempted to run off after officers arrived.

Durham Police has confirmed that alcohol was seized from several members of the group and that an investigation is currently ongoing to identify some of the teenagers in Bishop Auckland.

The police force has also put an urgent warning out to young people who illegally buy alcohol or people over the age of 18 that purchase alcohol for youths.   

A spokesperson from Durham Police said: “We are aware that students are leaving school and wishing to celebrate the end of their exams, we wish to warn people that it is illegal to purchase alcohol below the age of 18 or buy alcohol for somebody who is under the age of 18.

“An investigation is underway to identify several of the youths who were present on Thursday evening.

“We will be addressing safeguarding concerns associated with alcohol consumption as well as further investigating public order offences that took place.”

The statement went on to confirm that the police force has circulated still images to schools in the area in the hope that they will find those responsible.

It added: “Thanks to our new and impressive Axon bodycam’s that officers have recently been issued with, we have some great footage of the youths responsible for these offences.

Bodycam photo stills have been sent around local schools for identification.

“If you were one of the youths responsible for the unacceptable behaviour that was directed towards officers on Thursday evening, please be ready for a knock at the door shortly.”
