PEOPLE assaulting emergency workers, from police officers to paramedics, is shockingly common and can even result in prison time – we’ve pulled together all the people who assaulted emergency workers on the last two months.

Assault of an emergency worker can net people a community sentence or even prison time, depending on the severity of the attack and their previous record.

In some cases, people even assault and attack paramedics and people trying to help them.

Often times this results in the person being forced to pay compensation for the offence.

These are the North East people who were charged in court after assaulting an emergency worker in the last two months:

Salamatu Aurwen Edwards-Tyutunnik, 41 of Thorpe Street, Easington Colliery, Peterlee, County Durham

Edwards-Tyutunnik’s case was heard before County Durham and Darlington Magistrates Court yesterday (Wednesday June 8).

He was charged after assaulting two police officers on the same day in what the courts called an “unprovoked assault.”

He was given 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was also made to pay £300 in compensation to both officers.

Ian Ord, 25 of Basingstoke Road, Peterlee, County Durham

Ord’s case was heard before County Durham and Darlington Magistrates Court on Tuesday May 10.

He was charged after assaulting a police officer, as well as assaulting two other people in September last year.

He also caused criminal damage to a Mini which he received no separate penalty for.

Ord was committed to prison for 14 weeks as a result of the assaults and was also made to pay £275 in compensation for the offences.

Robert Stevenson, 50, of Farnham Close, Woodham, Newton Aycliffe, County Durham

Stevenson’s case was heard before County Durham and Darlington Magistrates Court on Thursday May 12.

He was charged with failing to comply with a community order and was therefore charged with his original offence of assaulting a police constable.

He was fined £120 as a result.

Gary Fawcett, 57 of Sandriggs in Darlington

Fawcett’s case was heard before North Yorkshire Magistrate’s Court on Monday April 25.

He was charged with being drunk and disorderly in a public place and also assaulting a police officer.

Fawcett was fined £116 for the assault and was given no separate penalty for being drunk and disorderly.

He was also made to pay £250 in compensation, £34 to victim services and £85 to Crown Prosecution Service.

Jason Sangster, 33 of Regent House, Commercial Street in Darlington

Sangster’s case was heard before County Durham and Darlington Magistrate’s Court on Friday May 6.

He was charged with assaulting a police officer as well as harassing someone, as well as having his suspended sentence activated for four other offences.

He was committed to prison for 24 weeks as a result of the offence and was also made to pay £50 in compensation.

Sangster was also made to pay £128 to victim services.

Philip Reilly, 39 of Lewis Road in Darlington

Reilly’s case was heard before Northumbria Magistrate’s Court on May 9.

He was charged after assaulting a British Transport police officer as well as being drunk and disorderly in Newcastle.

He was given a community order and was also made to pay £100 in compensation.

Reilly was also made to pay £95 to victim services and £85 to Crown Prosecution Service.
