IT can be sad to see so many empty shop units across the North East, however, many food outlets are opening up in Darlington so The Northern Echo headed into town to take a look at some of the newest places to eat.
With a good range of savoury, sweet, takeaway and sit-in places to choose from, there’s sure to be something on this list to tickle your fancy.
- Deli-cious
This Greek café opened on High Row in December 2021 and serves a range of Greek sweet treats including baklava and some more traditional English cakes such as Victoria Sponge. The team also serves lunches, afternoon teas, coffee and smoothies. The café overlooks West Row and the indoor market, making it the perfect spot to people-watch.

2. Cake Away
As the name implies, this cake shop on Crown Street offers a sweet escape for anyone with a sugar craving. Serving old favourites including cornflake tarts, ‘old school sprinkle sponge’ and strawberry pavlova cake, a treat from Cake Away would make the perfect gift for someone with a sweet tooth.
3. Only Scrans
The playful name of this food outlet on High Northgate may not scream takeaway Sunday roasts but the reviews on Facebook have got us eager to give them a try. Roast dinners with beef or chicken come with Yorkshire puddings, vegetables, gravy, pigs in blankets and spuds. If you fancy some lazy yet traditional Sunday nosh, Only Scrans might be right up your street.

4. MJ’s Cake Café
This cake café on Station Terrace in Middleton St George opened last Saturday (May 28) after owner Shalona Beaumont got planning permission at a Darlington Borough Council planning meeting in October 2021. As the name implies, this place is cakes-galore, however, it also sounds like an ideal place to grab a cup of tea or coffee, and pupchinos will be on the menu from next week if you fancy treating your pooch.
5. Rainbow Scoops
This ice cream parlour on Tubwell Row doesn’t appear to have opened just yet but we’re sure ice cream in the town centre will be extremely popular.
