A ROAD closure in County Durham is currently in place after numerous police vehicles blocked the route - causing traffic chaos for many motorists.
Drivers are being urged to avoid the B6309 between Medomsley Edge and the Derwentside Immigration Detention Centre due to a police incident.

A cordon has also been erected as cars making their way towards the road have been turned around by police throughout the morning.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are not yet known but witnesses have described seeing a police helicopter hovering nearby.

As the police road closure is currently in place, The Northern Echo has put together a guide to possible diversion routes for drivers to follow and avoid the traffic.
For those already on the B6309, they can either turn around and travel on the A694, or travel on the B6310 and connect with Fines Road.
For those that are approaching the incident from thr B6310, drivers can travel down Elm Park Terrace and avoid the police incident that way.
