A CHIPPY in North Ormesby has been slapped with a one-star food hygiene rating after an inspection.

Middlesbrough Council inspected King’s Fish Shop on March 30 2022 and ordered it to clean up its act.

The inspectors said that major improvement was necessary over the management of food safety.

This includes having a system or checks in place to ensure food is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in the future.

Improvement is also necessary around hygienic food handling, which includes preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling, and storage, as well as the cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.

The council’s food safety officer will have outlined ways that the takeaway can increase its score and it will be able to request a re-inspection to get a new rating once the improvements have been made.

King’s Fish Shop is now one of 13 establishments across Middlesbrough with a one-star rating.

However, one-star is not the lowest on the scale and food vendors can be given a zero rating if urgent action needs to be taken.

There are five firms in Middlesbrough with a zero-star rating, according to the latest Food Standards Agency data.

These are Adulis on Gresham Road, Al-Madina on Parliament Road, Pakeeza on Linthorpe Road, Palladium Fish & Chips on Eastbourne Road and Zan’s on Parliament Road.

Mouse droppings were found throughout Palladium Fish & Chips, behind fridges, freezers and even inside the cupboards, however, the takeaway has been under new management since the inspection.

Kings Fish Shop has been contacted for comment.
