MAJOR roadworks at a junction on a North East trunk road are set to get underway from next week.
The work is taking place at the A66 Elton Interchange, in Stockton, to make improvements ahead of a 969-home development nearby.
The project, which will be completed in six phases, is being funded by Homes England with support from housing developers Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon.
It comes as the developers begin work to build approximately 969 houses on a site to the east of Yarm Back Lane.

The current roundabouts at the site will be removed to allow construction of a new traffic-signaled interchange on the bridge above the A66.
Sections of Yarm Back Lane will also be widened and Darlington Road re-aligned.
The A66 eastbound slip-road will be lengthened and widened as part of the works.
The works are due to begin on Wednesday, May 11 and advance works will take place on Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10.
The second phase of work is expected to start on May 18 and it is hoped the project will be completed by the winter of 2023.
Here is what motorists can expect:
Advance works (Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10)
Four-way traffic lights are set to be in place from 9.30am until 3.30pm.
Phase One (Wednesday, May 11 until Wednesday, May 18)
The traffic management will be in place on weekdays from 9.30am until 3.30pm.
Both roundabouts at the interchange will have inside lane closures as work takes place to remove them.
Two-way traffic lights will be in place on Darlington Road, as well as overnight closure of the A66 eastbound on May 16 and May 17.
Phase Two (May 18 until November 2022)
The traffic management will again be in place on weekdays as required from 9.30am until 3.30pm.
The eastbound carriageway of Darlington Road heading towards Hartburn will be closed during these hours and will be managed with two-way traffic signals.
When will the works be completed?
Further phases will follow and the roadworks are due for completion in autumn/winter 2023.
