AN aerobatics team, made up of two former British Aerobatic Champions, and an L-39 Albatross jet display will be coming to Teesside Airshow, marking just 50 days until take-off.

The Teesside Airshow, organised by Skylive Air, is the only one taking place in the North of England in 2022 and will be taking place at Teesside Airport again on June 11, after a five-year grounding.

Joining the packed line-up will be ex-Royal Air Force pilot John Hurrell, putting an L-39 Albatross jet through its paces and demonstrating the power and agility of the aircraft which can hit well over 400mph.

John, who saw active service in the 1st Gulf War as part of the RAF’s Tornado force and now runs High G Jets, is teaming up with jet maintenance centre L39 Aviation to bring the display to the region.

The Starlings Aerobatic Team, made up of Tom Cassells and Michael Pickin, will also attend with high-octane close formation aerobatics, tumbles and opposition manoeuvres.

It will bring the latest German Extra NG aircraft and classic, world championship-winning Cap 232 to the event, both capable of unlimited aerobatics.

The announcements come just days after scoring an RAF hat-trick, with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight joining the Red Arrows and RAF Falcons parachute display team and a Eurofighter Typhoon.

Extra entertainment will come in the form of an exhibition of 300 classic cars, funfair, live music, strongman contest and food stalls.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said: “With just days to go the Airshow has pulled even more brilliant displays out of the bag, with the Starlings and the L-39 bringing something different to the line-up, showing off the power and precision of world-class aircraft as well as the pinnacle of human skill and expertise.

“The much-loved Airshow won’t disappoint when it returns to Teesside in a few short weeks to impress audiences and, as the only one in the North, put our airport on the map even more. If you want to be one of the 25,000 we expect to welcome on the day, get your tickets now.”

Chris Petty, one of the organisers of Teesside Airshow, said: “Whether you want some of the country’s top aerobatics, jet displays and military powerhouses or history and heritage, there’s something for everyone at this year’s airshow. That’s on top of other entertainment, like our classic car show, live music and much more.”

Pilot John Hurrell said: “The team and I are really excited to be bringing this fast-paced high-octane jet to the Teesside Airshow. With so few airshows on this year, it’ll be great to get up in the skies and put on a performance that’s certain to wow the huge crowds. I can’t wait to join the great line-up.”

Tickets are on sale now priced at £10 per adult, £5 per child. A family ticket, consisting of two adults and two children, will be £25 and there is free entry for those aged under six.

The Teesside Airport Foundation will be the charity partner for the event.
