PICTURES show the moment a car was driven into the sea on a North East beach and onlookers swam to rescue the driver.

The incident happened at about 8.17pm on Monday (April 18), when a blue Audi left the road and went onto the beach, injuring a number of people.

Two women remain at James Cook University Hospital following the incident, where they are being treated for their injuries.

A man in his 70s was arrested, while the promenade reopened at around 3am on Tuesday.

Police issued a further statement following the incident on Easter Monday.

In an updated statement on Tuesday, a spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Police enquiries are continuing into an incident at Saltburn beach near to the promenade, after a number of people were injured by a car around 8:17pm on Monday 18th April.

“Officers received reports that pedestrians on and near to the beach had been injured when a blue Audi had left the road and gone onto the beach, near to the Pier.

“Two women are still receiving treatment at James Cook University Hospital for serious leg injuries, and two people received minor injuries and did not need medical treatment at the scene.

“A man in his 70s remains under arrest.

“Following enquiries, police tape remains in the area and the road and the promenade were reopened around 3am this morning (Tuesday 19th April).

“Anyone who saw the blue Audi, who witnessed the incident or who may have footage of the incident, is asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.”
