THE A1(M) has reopened in County Durham 10 hours after a man was killed when he was hit by a HGV.

Police have confirmed the fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a HGV on the A1(M) Northbound between Junction 60 at Sedgefield and Junction 61 at Bowburn happened in the early hours of this morning.

The Northern Echo:

The road had been closed throughout the morning in both directions, but it is now fully reopened.

A spokesperson for Durham Police said: "Officers are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision involving a pedestrian and a HGV on the A1(M) Northbound between Junction 60 at Sedgefield and Junction 61 at Bowburn in the early hours of this morning.

"The pedestrian, a man in his 30s, sadly died at the scene.

"The road remains closed as officers work with Highways England and an investigation is underway.

"Anyone who has any information or dashcam footage should call 101 with the incident reference number 48 of April 16."

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 2.08am this morning. A pedestrian was involved in a collision with a car on the A1 just after Junction 60. We dispatched two ambulance crews to the scene."
