THE A1(M) is closed in both directions in County Durham this morning due to a serious crash.

The accident, which happened in the early hours of the morning, has closed the road between junction 60, Bradbury, and 61, Bowburn.

The road is expected to be shut throughout the morning.

Due to the serious nature of the crash, police are carrying out an investigation at the scene.

It is understood the crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian.

Motorists are being urged to avoid the area.

Durham Constabulary has been contacted for more information. They have said the road will be closed for the "foreseeable future".

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: "We got a call at 2.08am this morning. A pedestrian was involved in a collision with a car on the A1 just after Junction 60. We dispatched two ambulance crews to the scene."

There are diversions in place Northbound via the Solid Square symbol and Southbound via the Solid Circle symbol via the A689, A177 and A688 through Sedgefield.

National Highways said shortly before 3am on Saturday morning: “The A1M in County Durham is closed in both directions between J60 (Bradbury) and J61 (Bowburn) due to a serious collision involving two cars and a pedestrian. Emergency services including Durham Constabulary are in attendance.

“National Highways Traffic Officers are also providing assistance on scene with traffic management. Due to the severity of the incident, the road is expected to remain closed for some time.”

Motorists in the area are advised to allow extra time for their journey and use an alternate route if possible.
