THE A1(M) is closed in both directions in County Durham this morning due to a serious crash.
The accident, which happened in the early hours of the morning, has closed the road between junction 60. Bradbury, and 61, Bowburn. It is expected to be shut throughout the morning.
Due to the serious nature of the crash, police are carrying out an investigation at the scene.
It is understood the crash involved two vehicles and a pedestrian.
Motorists are being urged to avoid the area.
There are diversions in place Northbound via the Solid Square symbol and Southbound via the Solid Circle symbol via the A689, A177 and A688 through Sedgefield.
- Full Northbound diversion routes
Exit the A1M northbound at J60 (Bradbury Interchange) and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto the A689 eastbound
Continue for 1.8 miles until the roundabout with the A177
Take the 1st exit and join the A177 northbound
Continue for 6.2 miles, crossing straight over one roundabout and at the second roundabout take the 1st exit onto the A688
Follow the A688 northbound to then re-join the A1 northbound at Bowburn Interchange

Exit the A1M southbound at J61 and take the 3rd exit at the roundabout onto the A688 eastbound
Continue eastbound on the A688 for 1.8 miles until the roundabout with the A177
At the roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A177
Continue for 6.2 miles, crossing straight over the 1st roundabout and at the 2nd roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A689
Continue on the A689 westbound to then re-join the A1M southbound at Bradbury Interchange
