500 HOMES are currently without power in the North East according to Northern Powergrid as snow causes travel chaos across the region.

It comes as further snow is predicted for much of tonight and the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for ice.

In Darlington snow is set to continue on and off throughout the day with heavier bouts of the white stuff late into the night.

Snow will start from 7pm tonight and continue into the morning until around 10 am.

Meanwhile, a fresh yellow weather warning alert has been issued for ice much of the North East and North Yorkshire.

According to the Met Office, “snow and hail showers” could lead to icy surfaces and “possible travel disruption.”

According to Northern Powergrid, 500 homes across the region, including Teesside and County Durham, are without power this morning.

  • TS5, 80 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 4.00pm
  • DL15, 200 homes affected with power expected to be restored by 7.30pm
  • NE17, 220 homes affected and Northern Powergrid  are reviewing how long it will take to get power back on here.

Yesterday saw over 400 homes without power as the initial bad weather hit the region.

The Met Office have confirmed that the weekend is looking more settled, however there will still be occasional “showers” and “frosty mornings”.

As we move into April, the departure from last weeks hot and summer weather continues as more unsettled and cooler weather is predicted.

The full long-range forecast between Monday April 4 to Wednesday April 13 reads: “Through Monday scattered showers continuing along eastern coastal regions, these dying out with time.

Thicker cloud across the northwest likely spreading southeastward through the day, bringing periods of rain, these potentially heavy for the far northwest, and possibly wintery in the northeast for a time.

Unsettled conditions are expected to continue through the rest of later in the week - with most areas will seeing spells of rain or showers, potentially wintry on high ground at times.

“Drier and more settled spells of weather are still possible, but more short-lived than recently. Showers will be heavy at times, with hail and thunder.

“Strong winds are also likely at times, particularly in the north and west, with temperatures mainly near or slightly above average.”
