A MAN has died following a two-vehicle collision which has left another driver critically ill in hospital.
The crash happened in Middlesbrough at about 11.40pm yesterday (Tuesday).
A 27-year-old man from Middlesbrough was killed in the collision in Dixon's Bank.
The man was driving a Volkswagen Passat when he was killed in the collision with a Mercedes C220.
The 32-year-old driver of the Mercedes was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.
The road was closed for several hours while emergency services worked at the scene.
Prior to the collision, officers had tried to stop a Mercedes vehicle which had been spotted travelling at high speed on Marton Road.
The incident has now been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to this police activity.
A spokesperson for Cleveland police said: "Detectives are investigating the incident and are appealing for anyone with information, or dashcam footage, to come forward.
"Family liaison officers are supporting those close to the man who died and our thoughts are with them."
Anyone with information on the collision or who saw the Mercedes prior to the incident is asked to call Cleveland Police on the non-emergency number 101.
