STAFF and pupils from Longfield Academy in Darlington wanted to do their bit to support the people of Ukraine by collecting essentials and funds over the last few weeks.

The school organised a non-uniform day with various activities and raised £425. This will be donated to the British Red Cross – Ukraine Crisis Appeal.

Children donated teddy bears for refugee children in the hopes of bringing comfort and a sense of normality for them.

Mayor of Darlington, Cllr Cyndi Hughes attended last week to congratulate pupils and staff on their fundraising success.

Cllr Hughes said: “During these tough times for many families here in Darlington, it was incredible to see how generous and thoughtful the pupils at Longfield Academy have been. The students spoke to me about the war in Ukraine and said they wanted to provide essentials to those fleeing the conflict.

“Most moving of all were the teddies they were donating explaining that the refugee children might need the comfort and security that only a teddy bear can provide.

“I congratulated and thanked the pupils and staff at Longfield Academy for their solidarity and support for the Ukrainian people.”

Mr Lindsay, head of school said: “We're extremely proud of the voluntary charity work we do throughout the year at Longfield, and when a national or international event occurs, we work hard to adapt our year-round charity calendar to meet need. Our children, families and staff should be exceptionally proud to have contributed such a lot in a short time to this worthy cause.”

Miss Leverton, teacher of Modern Foreign Languages said: “The pupils and staff of Longfield felt they wanted to play their part in supporting the people of Ukraine, so my Year 7 form group and I decided to try and collect items to be able to donate to those fleeing the Ukraine. We were very impressed by the generosity of Longfield pupils, their families and staff and we are all really proud of what we've achieved as a school.”
