THERE will be night closures in place on a major trunk road to allow for repairs to be made to the Tees Flyover.

The work is due to get underway in April and means the A19 will be closed between 9pm and 6am on the nights it is taking place.

National Highways is replacing four joints on the slip roads of the viaduct, which allow the bridge to naturally contract and expand in differing weather conditions and with movement from traffic.

Ben Dobson, of the National Highways A19 and A69 Department, said: “The joints have lasted for a very long time; however, the time has now come for them to be replaced.

“Once the work has finished, the joints shouldn’t need replacing again for at least 25 years.”

The work is due to start on Friday, April 1.

While the replacement work on the northbound side of the viaduct takes place, there will be weekend overnight closures to the slip roads carrying traffic from the A66 both eastbound and westbound to the A19 northbound carriageway.

The work on the southbound side of the viaduct will require the closure of the slip road from the A19 southbound to the A66 eastbound.

Mr Dobson added:  “We have worked closely with the Tees Valley Combined Authority, and with both Stockton and Middlesbrough Borough Councils, to agree diversion routes and to make sure road users are given advance warning of the slip road closures.

“We have looked at different ways of planning this work and decided that weekend closures were the best option as this will significantly shorten disruption.”

The northbound slip roads will be closed as follows:

  • From 9pm on Thursday 31 March to 6am on Friday 1 April
  • From 9pm on Friday 1 April to 6am on Monday, 4 April
  • From 9pm on Thursday 7 April to 6am on Friday 8 April
  • From 9pm on Friday 8 April to 6am on Monday, 11 April
  • From 9pm on Thursday 21 April to 6am on Friday 22 April
  • From 9pm on Friday 22 April to 6am on Monday, 25 April

The southbound slip road and lane 1 of the A19 southbound on the viaduct, will be closed as follows:

  • From 9pm on Thursday 28 April to 6am on Friday 29 April
  • From 9pm on Friday 29 April to 6am on Monday 2 May.

From 9pm on Friday 29 April to Sunday 1 May, the A19 southbound carriageway will be closed after the exit to A1046 to allow for a crane to be lifted into place.
