AN airline which has been resurrected from the ashes has announced a return to the North East - but will only operate services from ONE airport.

Flybe Ltd has confirmed it will operate a daily service to Belfast in North Ireland from the region, with flights beginning on August 25.

Flying from Newcastle Airport, the newly formed airline is making a return after the company filed for bankruptcy in 2020.

The company's business and assets - including the well-established name - was purchased in April last year by Thyme Opco.

But last night (March 22), the airline did not name Teesside Airport among its UK-wide list of airports it would soon serve.

Other domestic airports include Leeds Bradford, London Heathrow, Glasgow, Manchester and East Midlands.

Dave Pflieger, Flybe CEO, said: “We think our new flights will benefit everyone who wants low fares and more flights to go on holiday and visit loved ones.

"Our new network will also ensure better regional connectivity inside the UK and between various UK and EU regions.

“Our goal is to create an airline that people love, and we aim to do that by making air travel on Flybe an easy and enjoyable experience so you will fly with us again in the future.

"The new Flybe team has worked tirelessly over the past year to create an airline that delivers on price, schedule, and choice.”

Responding to the announcement, Teesside Airport suggested it remained in "constant talks" with a number of airlines to help "boost" its destinations.

Teesside Airport has so far seen the return of big names including TUI and Ryanair to its summer schedules to holiday destinations.

An airport spokesperson said: “Since Teesside Airport was brought into public ownership and saved from closure it has gone from strength-to-strength, despite the unprecedented impact the pandemic has had on global air travel.

"We’re in constant talks with a raft of domestic and international airlines and tour operators to further boost the growing number of destinations we offer for people right across the region.

“With travel restrictions now eased, there’s no better time to fly from Teesside to popular city break locations like Belfast, Dublin and Southampton or grab some summer sun in the Mediterranean - all with zero hassle.

“Our recent multimillion-pound terminal redevelopment and security transformation will avoid you queuing for hours and take the stress out of travelling. So, you're just a few steps away from a friendly welcome and relaxing start to your getaway."
