SUPPORT and advice are on offer for kind-hearted North East families who have offered to host Ukrainian refugees.

More than 100,000 people across the UK have already pledged an interest to open their homes to those fleeing the war-ravaged nation, as Russia's brutal invasion of the country enters its fourth week.

Many residents from Middlesbrough and the wider North East will take part in the 'Homes for Ukraine' scheme, which will see refugees live in the homes of hosts for at least six months.

Jolande Mace, Middlesbrough Council's strategic cohesion and migration manager, has urged those in the town who have signed up to the scheme and are matched to a refugee, to contact her.

She said: “Middlesbrough has always been an open and welcoming place, and we want to ensure that all new arrivals to our town from Ukraine have the appropriate support.

“We can provide the help those fleeing the war need, as well as practical advice and guidance for hosts.”

Those who have volunteered and been matched should call Jolande on 07970 964212 or email Jolande_mace@middlesbrough.gov.uk

In the first phase of the scheme, people will need to fill out a visa application for themselves and a named Ukrainian individual or family they wish to sponsor.

The process start today, and those who don't personally know anyone fleeing Ukraine, can register their interest to help on the government's website: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/homes-for-ukraine-scheme-frequently-asked-questions

Host households in the UK will be offered an optional tax-free payment of £350 a month for up to 12 months, regardless of how many individuals they support.

Those who are granted a visa under the scheme will be eligible to work and can access state benefits and public services for three years.
