A BBC presenter who has been keeping millions of viewers informed on the Russian invasion of Ukraine has shared a defiant message after being forced to flee the capital.

Clive Myrie has been embedded in Kyiv in Ukraine since the war broke out, providing coverage on BBC News and BBC World News.

Presenting alongside BBC Chief International Correspondent Lyse Doucet, Myrie has been seen documenting Russia's assault on Ukraine as the death toll rises.

Earlier this week, however, it was reported that he had been forced to flee Kyiv as the situation deteriorated - with Myrie sharing pictures of huge queues leaving the capital.

Now, the BBC presenter has confirmed he is now returning to London and has left a defiant message saying he will return.

On Twitter, he said: "A quick thank you for all your good wishes over the last two weeks, you've all been very kind to me and the BBC teams in Ukraine.

"I'm now heading back to London, but will return #UkraineRussianWar #Ukraine."

It comes after Myrie shared a heartbreaking message on Sunday, March 6, from Ukraine as he showed huge queues.

Writing on Twitter on Tuesday morning (March 8), he said: "It was a long, day of driving and queueing to get out of Kyiv. Imagine having to leave all you know in a hurry because you're being shelled! What do you pack? o pets come too? It's freezing cold and you pray those in neighboring countries will welcome you, not despise you!."

"My thoughts are with the 1million who’ve fled #Ukraine because they might be killed. The millions who fled #syria and many other millions escaping repression, poverty, war. They all pray they’ll be welcomed in other countries as human beings. That’s all they ask 2/2 #refugees."

After Myrie tweeted he was making a return, hundreds responded with messages of support to him and colleagues for broadcasting from the crisis-hit country.

One person said: "Thanks Clive for all you have done to show us the reality of war with potential personal risk to yourself, be safe."

Another said: "Safe journey to you. Heartfelt thanks to you and the team for such exemplary reporting."
