TWO Darlington women stole more than £1,200 worth of meat and alcohol from a string of shops during a four-month crime spree.

Leanne Thompson, 45, and Zoe Louise Postgate, 35, both pleaded guilty last month to eight counts of theft and were sentenced by magistrates sitting at York on Friday (March 3).

The court heard that the pair stole more than a thousand pounds worth of alcohol and meat during a shoplifting spree in North Yorkshire between July and October last year.

On July 11 and 12 they stole alcohol of a value unknown from the Co-Op on Leyburn Market Place and returned to the shop on August 26 where they stole £294 worth of alcohol and meat.

The following month, the pair stole alcohol worth £361 from Mainsgill Farm Shop in East Layton, Richmond, on September 18.

Less than a week later, on September 24, Thompson and Postgate targeted the Co-Op on Bedale Market Place where they stole booze worth £221.50.

Three days later, on September 27, the pair stole meat worth £155 from the M&S food store on Friarage Street in Northallerton.

Their crime spree continued into October when they again stole meat, this time of an unknown value, from the M&S store in Northallerton on October 4.

On October 17 the pair were at it again when they stole alcohol to the value of £250 from Northallerton Tesco.

Thompson, of Eldon Street, Darlington, was given a community order with a nine-week overnight curfew that will be electronically monitored.

Under the order, she must remain at her home address between 7pm and 7am every night from March 4 until May 6, 2022.

Thompson was also ordered by magistrates to pay £180 in court costs and charges at a rate of £5 per week.

Postgate, of Branksome Green, was also sentenced to a nine-week electronically-monitored overnight curfew meaning she must stay at home between 7pm and 7am until May 6.

She also has to pay £180 court costs and charges.

Neither woman has to pay compensation due insufficient details provided by the prosecutor for the court to make a compensation order.
