TWO controlled explosions have been carried out to deal with a historic military device found during site work on Teesside. 

The explosive device was found on a site near the A66 in Teesside today.

Military experts were called to the scene to detonate the device to make it safe.

A section of the Tees Dock Road was  closed from about 3.45pm to allow for the explosion to take place.

A Cleveland Police spokesperson said: "Earlier today officers were called to a report of a suspected historical military device which was discovered during works on a nearby site."

She added: "Following two controlled explosions at the site, all roads have now reopened and rail services resumed.

"Thanks to anyone affected for their co-operation and understanding."

Delays had been expected on the A66 while rail services were also affected between Middlesbrough and Redcar.
