METROCENTRE bosses have unveiled plans to transform a popular part of the shopping mall - with work set to be completed just in time for Harrods.

Brand new pictures reveal how the popular "Town Square" section of the shopping centre in Gateshead will look as it undergoes a major facelift.

The square, which is home to the likes of O2, Costa Coffee - and soon to be Harrods' H Beauty, will see trees and shrubs make a return as part of the new look.

Revealing the details to The Northern Echo, Metrocentre bosses said the refurbished area will include new seating areas, flooring and lighting.

Ben Cox of Sovereign Centros, Senior Asset Manager for Metrocentre, said the major refurbishment work is part of several projects underway.

He said: “We are pleased to announce the launch of a major refurbishment programme to upgrade Town Square.

"Work is currently underway and due to complete ahead of the arrival of our new anchor tenant, H Beauty by Harrods this summer."

When the shopping centre first opened in the 1980s, shoppers were greeted with trees, plants and shrubs throughout the mall.

But over the years, and as the mall has undergone numerous refits, such greenery has been removed much to shoppers' disappointment.

However, explaining the return of a "greener feel," Mr Cox said: "The new Town Square will include trees and shrubs to create a greener feel plus installation of a variety of seating areas ranging from slatted benches to large stone pebbles for a natural, earthy appearance.

"Lighting and flooring will also be upgraded, as well as the introduction of glass balustrades to improve visibility between upper and lower malls.

"This is one of several projects currently underway to refresh and reinvigorate Metrocentre and we look forward to announcing our plans in the coming months.”

It comes as Harrods' H Beauty will move into the former House of Fraser site in just a few months time, bringing a beauty hall and champagne bar.

Earlier this month, the retailer said the imminent opening was a reflection of the "ongoing demand" for premium shopping experiences outside of London.

Annalise Fard, Director of Home and Beauty at Harrods, said: “The incredible response we have had to our first two H beauty store openings not only reflects the ongoing demand for exceptional, high quality retail experiences outside of London, but also the passion for beauty that exists amongst the customers we serve in these regions.”

Harrods has not yet confirmed an exact opening date for its new Metrocentre store.
