EMERGENCY services and members of the public have rescued a man during a potentially life-threatening incident in Bishop Auckland earlier this evening.

Police and fire crews were called to the Newton Cap Viaduct at around 6pm and found a man on the other side of the barriers on the former railway bridge.

The viaduct was closed at both ends while the man was brought to safety.

Group manager Ian Irving said police and members of the public were holding on to the man when they arrived.

Firefighters using specialist equipment made sure he was safe and got him over the barrier to safety.

Mr Irving said: "There was a member of the public on the viaduct.

“Police were in attendance and that member of the public was rescued by fire service personnel and handed over to the authorities.

“We effected the rescue and go him to the safe side of the barrier.

“It was fantastic work by the crews. We are trained to work at height in difficult situations and conditions.

“Obviously the crews have put their training to good use and effected a rescue successfully.

“All credit to crews involved, as well as our partners in the police and the members of the public.

"They have undoubtedly saved him from very serious injury if not worse."
