RAIL operator LNER has urged potential passengers not to travel on its services this Friday due to high winds and stormy weather.

Storm Dudley is expected to affect the UK on Wednesday night and Thursday, bringing a period of “very strong and disruptive winds”.

While Storm Eunice is then set to hit the UK on Friday also bringing strong winds and "flying debris”.

According to the weather forecaster, road, rail, air and ferry services may be affected and some roads and bridges are likely to close.

In a warning notice, LNER said: “Severe weather is forecast for Friday 18th February which is likely to cause significant disruption to our services. Please do not travel on Friday 18th February.

"Any customers with tickets dated for travel on LNER services on Friday 18th February may travel on Thursday 17th February instead, or will be entitled to a full refund.

"Our services will be most impacted by the severe weather in the southern parts of our route (south of York/Leeds) and as a result we will be running a reduced service between London King’s Cross and York/Leeds.

"We expect these services to be extremely busy and subject to short notice cancellations and alterations. At present the weather is not forecasted to affect our route north of York so we still plan to run services between York and Newcastle / Scotland.

"However, please check before you travel as this is subject to change at short notice."

The rail operator runs trains from Darlington, Durham, Northallerton and Middlesbrough railway stations among others in the region.

The Met Office has also warned of injuries and danger to life from both storms is likely from large waves and beach material being thrown onto coastal roads, sea fronts and properties.

Falling trees and damage to buildings is also one to look out for, such as tiles being blown from roof tops and flying debris.

Power cuts are also likely, just as many have recovered, and are still recovering, from Storm Arwen last year and phone coverage could also be affected.
