THE family and friends of a teenager killed in a van crash have paid tribute to a 'true gentle giant' and 'one in a million' after gathering for a balloon release this evening (February 10).

Philip Plews, who was a passenger in a white transit van, was killed in a one-vehicle collision on Carmel Road South in Darlington on Saturday (February 5).

Since his death, there has been an outpouring of tributes and emotional words for Mr Plews, who has been remembered for his love of cars, fishing and anything motoring related.

The loved ones of the 17-year-old gathered at Holgate Moor Green at 6.30pm this evening to release balloons and lanterns marked with special words, some of them saying "fly high" as a mark of respect.

Philip's best friend, Jamie Wilby, called the teenager a "true brother" and someone who would help out anyone.

He told The Northern Echo: "Fly high my brother - you were the best friend that anyone could ask for - I love you.

"He was the most calm and relaxed man, he would help anyone and he was massively into his cars, bikes and quads - anything with an engine. I miss him so much, I'd give an arm and a leg to have him back."
