MAGISTRATES have dished out more than £2,000 in fines and charges to North East train fare dodgers in court.

South Yorkshire magistrates sitting at Doncaster Justice Centre on Monday (February 7) dealt with a raft of cases of people from Darlington, Teesside and County Durham being caught on trains without a valid ticket.

Among those fined were 36-year-old Kimblerley Clarke of Ingleby Barwick who was caught travelling by train between York and Darlington on July 15, 2021, without a valid ticket.

The case was proved against Clarke, of Hatchlands Park, and she was ordered to pay a total of £430.10 in court fines, compensation and charges.

Middlesbrough man Danny Cook was caught without a valid rail ticket between Darlington and Doncaster on July 21, 2021 and the case was proven in court on Monday.

The 27-year-old, of Victoria Terrace, was orded to pay a total of £455.60 in compensation, fines and charges.

Curtis Hall, 21, of Lowther Drive in Newton Aycliffe boarded a train at Newton Aycliffe on May 27, 2021, without buying a ticket despite there being fully functioning ticket machines at the station.

He was issued with a fixed penalty notice to pay a £20 fine but he failed to do so and did not respond to a reminder letter.

Failing to buy the £3.70 ticket between Newton Aycliffe and Darlington ended up costing Hall £407.70 as the case was proved in court.

Thornaby man Ian Cox fell foul of train officials when he failed to produce a valid ticket for the short rail journey between North Road and Darlington on May 28, 2021.

After failing to pay the fine nor responding to a reminder letter, the £2.80 fare ended up costing Cox, of Thornaby Road, £406.80 after the case against him was found proven.

Del Mason, of Lismore Drive, Darlington, was also caught fare-dodging on May 28 when he didn't have a valid ticket for a £3.10 rail journey between Thornaby and Eaglescliffe.

He failed to pay a fine and respond to a reminder letter and now has to pay £407.10 in fines, compensation and charges after the case was proved in court.

Mary Boyd, of Brighton Road, Darlington was caught travelling by train without a valid ticket between Thornaby and Eaglescliffe on May 26, 2021.

After failing to pay a fine and not responding to a reminder letter, she was ordered to pay £407.10 by magistrates.

The combined value of the fines, compensation and charges imposed by magistrates across the half-dozen individuals amounted to more than £2,100.
