HERE’S what The Northern Echo understands so far about the fire that broke out in Birtley last night.
Firefighters remain at the scene of a major blaze at an industrial site in Birtley, near Chester-le-Street, which broke out late last night.
Emergency services attended the scene at Durham Road shortly before midnight following reports of 'loud bangs like fireworks' from members of the public.
Nine fire engines and an aerial platform attended the fire over the course of the night.
Witnesses believe the fire started in a small aluminium unit next to Motorpoint, but this has not been confirmed.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
No injuries have been reported.
How serious was the fire?
Large plumes of dark smoke could be seen miles away from the blaze.
Residents in the area were advised to keep windows and doors shut to help prevent them breathing in noxious fumes.
A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We currently have nine fire engines and a aerial ladder platform in attendance at a building fire on Durham Road in Birtley.
"Please keep all windows and doors shut if you live in the area #staysafe."
Has it affected road users?
Motorists are being asked to plan their journeys ahead as diversions remain in place around the scene this morning.
The A167 Durham Road is closed both ways from Vigo Lane, at the Barley Mow Inn, to Harras Bank.
Traffic is coping well but the incident is said to affecting those travelling between Chester-le-Street and the A1 J66, Bowes Incline.
A tweet from the Northumbria Police Road Safety said: "Large fire on the A167 Birtley is closed. This impacts on the A1 diversion southbound at the Angel of the North.
"The diversion is back north to the A184 through Gateshead ,A19 south.
"An evolving situation, Officers are located at key points to assist with the diversion."
What about bus services?
The number 21 is currently unable to service stops at Birtley and Barley Mow.
Go North East passengers are advised to catch the bus from Northlands Roundabout, Picktree and Portabello in both directions.

How have people in the area been affected?
Residents are reporting that their water is off or running on reduced pressure as firefighters continue to deal with the fire.
Northumbrian Water tweeted: “Fire Brigade are dealing with a large fire in the area, this may be affecting your water supply. We are working to bring more water into the area. Thank you for your patience.”
What about schools in the area?
Barley Mow Primary School is closed.
A statement on the school’s website said: “Unfortunately, due to the fire on Durham Road, Birtley, we have been advised by Gateshead Council to close school today. We hope to be open tomorrow. Thank you.”
Lord Lawson of Beamish Academy is open.
A statement on the school’s website said: “A very quick message as unable to respond to all queries. School is open as normal. Please allow plenty of time for travel and call Year Base if your child will be late. We hope our school community are all safe.”
