THE death of a second soldier from Catterick Garrison in the space of two days has been confirmed by the Army - and an investigation has been launched.

However, The Northern Echo understands the deaths are not linked.

Police said they were called to the army base, which is near Richmond in North Yorkshire, at 5am on Saturday February 5 after the sudden death of a 33-year-old man.

A spokesperson for North Yorkshire Police added: "The death is not being treated as suspicious. Police are assisting in preparing a report for the coroner."

The army confirmed another soldier had died on Sunday, it is understood this death is being investigated by British Transport Police and Greater Manchester Police Neither soldier has been named, they are not thought to be form the same unit.

Catterick Garrison is the biggest army base in Britain with over 13,000 personnel.

An army spokesman said: "The circumstances surrounding these deaths are being investigated and it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time.

"Our thoughts are with the soldiers’ family and friends at this difficult time."

The Garrison is home to several Army units, including 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, the Royal Lancers and 4 Scots The Highlanders.
